SO IMAGINE THE RESULTS WHEN THESE TWO COMBINE FORCES TO CREATE A SUMPTUOUSLY HEALTHY YET DELICIOUS CUISINE!

STARTING FROM 23 MARCH TILL END APRIL 2012, LOVERS OF FINE FOOD CAN FEAST ON THE HEALTHIEST AND MOST POTENT CHINESE CUISINE IMAGINABLE THAT IS WHOLESOME AND HEALTH-BOOSTING WITHOUT THAT AWFUL MEDICINAL, BITTER TASTE.

As a child, my parents used to dose me on Chinese herbal medicines that tasted nasty, looked nasty and smelled worse. Sure I am now healthy, robust and brimming with energy thanks to my parents and Chinese herbs but I sure would have liked a more palatable way!

Now there is!

Shang Palace's new Health is Wealth menu features the very best in Chinese herbal and medicinal cuisine that retains all the goodness in addition to a delicious taste only the best chefs can muster

The new menu is practically a mini crash course in Chinese Traditional Medicine as each delightful and delicious looking dish is explained in great detail about its efficacy.

This is what I enjoyed;
1 Double-boiled 6-Flavour Chicken Soup.jpg
Double boiled, 6-flavoured Chicken Soup; RM 32

Double Boiled 6 Flavour Chicken Soup; Tones the spleen and kidney system
I always like chicken soup and ordered 2 portions and since the guest next to me was missing, I drank his soup too so now my spleen and kidney must be in tip top condition. Even in western cultures, chicken soup is not only good for your health but your soul.

Sauteed Lamb With Dang Shen and Bei Qi; RM 68

Sauteed sliced Lamb with Dang Sheng and Bei Qi; Strengthens the stomach and benefits the Qi or Chi, the unseen but can be felt energy that pervades the universe.
I normally avoid lamb as I don't like the smell and taste and also only this morning Mary was playing with her lamb in the meadows and now it has been slaughtered to Mary's mortification. But this lamb was so well done and infused with the tantalising flavours of herbs I ate with gusto what I usually avoid like the plague!

Prawns in Ginseng wine and Dang Gui; RM 58

Prawns in Ginseng Wine and Dang Gui; I hate prawns regardless of whatever you put in since I saw 'Alien' the movie in which the monster emerged from the spaceman's stomach looking like an awful lobster or gigantic prawn. But my friends assured me the 2 prawns tasted great while nourishing their kidneys and improving their Chi.

Steamed Codfish with Chen Pi and Black Fungus; RM 118

Steamed Codfish with Chen Pi and Black Fungus; the cod was super fresh and the fungus not only nourished my spleen and stomach but also played with colours as the white cod and black fungus acted as yin and yang.

1 Double-boiled 6-Flavour Chicken Soup.jpg
Vegetarian Chicken; RM 32
IMG_0107.JPG
Vegetarian Chicken with Strawberry and Hawthorne Sauce; this strengthened my stomach and digestive system though I prefer kampong chicken or organic chicken as I am not a vegetarian. If Buddha wanted us to be vegetarians, He would have made us cows. Still, the sauce was delicious and unusual though the chicken tasted like bean curd...

1 Double-boiled 6-Flavour Chicken Soup.jpg
Wok Fried Organic Charcoal Noodles; RM 36
IMG_0107.JPG

Wok fried Organic Charcoal Noodles with Yu Zhu and Basil Leaves; Benefited my Chi, balanced my Yin and nourished my internal dryness, whatever that meant. I don't think my insides are dry like Sahara desert but I am sure I became healthier. The black noodles look like the Italian spaghetti with octopus sauce but this had a beautiful, lingering fragrance and I could smell the faint, exotic charcoal.

1 Double-boiled 6-Flavour Chicken Soup.jpg
Herbal Desserts; RM 32
IMG_0107.JPG
Herbal Desserts; Ginseng Jelly with Aloe Vera jelly which tasted great and the description alone assured me I was on to a good thing. It was also supposed to reduce my body heat and remove any toxicity. The chilled jujube cake with osmanthus is anti-ageing and cough preventing so it is as good as SK-II.

The Dang Gui glutinous rice balls were supposed to brighten my eyes, improved blood flow and general circulation.

SHANG PALACE INTRODUCES

HERBAL CUISINE MENU

Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with Eu Yan Sang, a leader in marketing Chinese herbs, introduces the “Health is Wealth” food promotion starting from 23 March 2012 until the end of April at Shang Palace.

Specially prepared by Chinese executive chef of Shang Palace, Tan Kim Weng, the dishes feature unique combinations of specialty Chinese herbs and healthy menu choices, offering beneficial properties for health and wellbeing, such as improving blood circulation, flushing toxins from the body, nourishing vital body organs, strengthening bones and benefiting mental concentration.

Among the highlights of the menu include the Double-Boiled “6-Flavour” Chicken Soup, a fresh and tender chicken dish double-boiled with selected high-quality “6-Flavour” ingredients and fragrant sugar-coated ginseng. This smooth, rich and aromatic soup helps to tone the spleen and lungs, brightens the eyes and benefits “Qi”. The Braised Sea Cucumber and Chinese Mushrooms with “Huai Shan” is a thick, succulent and premium grade sea cucumber dish braised with sweet and powdery huai shan (Chinese yam). It helps to improve kidney function, enhances blood circulation and nourishes the spleen and lungs.

Healthy vegetarian dishes, such as the Braised Maitake and King Oyster Mushrooms with Vegetarian Oyster Sauce, feature a fine selection of king oyster mushrooms combined with tender maitake mushrooms and fresh broccoli. Rich in taste and aroma, the dish helps to reduce blood lipids, nourishes the bowels, stomach and skin, and strengthen bones. The American Ginseng Jelly with Aloe Vera Ice Cream is a healthy dessert which nourishes the skin and neutralizes toxins.
