Your Brand, A Timeless Classic - the seventh edition of The BrandLaureate BestBrands Awards 2012 Gala Dinner.

On Tuesday, May 28th 2013, The Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF) held its BestBrands Awards 2012 Gala Dinner at Hotel Majestic, Kuala Lumpur. The elegant evening saw 1,000 guests attending with VVIP's and special guests.

The pre-dinner cocktail was abuzz with guests and winners of the Award. The free flow of cocktail complemented the networking hour while the pre-dinner show had the entire guest entertained with the performances of one of Malaysia’s leading violinist Dennis Lau and upcoming child star, Crystal Lee and top Bhangra music duo Goldkartz.

Dr KKJohan, the President of The BrandLaureate in his welcome speech, spoke on the importance of branding and how the route to brand success is one that takes time, patience and commitment.
Relating the story of Michelangelo, the great Renaissance artist and painter, he said that brand owners must be like Michelangelo who saw the angel in a piece of marble, carved the angel out and set it free. The great sculptor also said that in every block of marble, there is a statuette and that it is for the artist to set it free. How to set it free is important and if we do not have the right tools for it, it will be difficult to achieve brand success.

“You must have the ABILITY to SEE beyond, which is the VISION. Vision brings hope, desire and dreams and as brand owners, we must have a strong vision for the brand - to know the potential of the brand and where it can lead us too.

In branding, VISION alone is not good enough. You must have a MISSION to bring your VISION to reality. You must have the CAPABILITY and KNOW HOW to achieve your desires and dreams.
We have often the expression – it is not what you say but how you say it that matters.

The HOW is more important than the WHAT. So often, we are caught up with the W's that is WHAT, WHY, WHERE and WHEN, but the secret is in the HOW, the implementation and the execution of it all. The HOW is the crux of the matter. A dream is a dream, without knowing how to go about realising the dream; it will only be a dream.”

Apart from the KNOW HOW CAPABILITY, passion and commitment to the brand is important. “If we have no passion, we have no drive, we become lackadaisical and complacent. If we have no commitment, we have no dedication and interest. Passion and commitment are key factors to brand success. “

Dr Johan mentioned that Malaysia has its Michelangelo's in the many brand leaders who have made it great and successful.

“Foremost in my mind, is Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, the Group Chief Executive of AirAsia Berhad who saw the angel in the airline that he bought over. He crafted the loss making airline to be a billion dollar business and build the AirAsia brand to be the best low cost carrier in the world. Fernandes saw what others could not see and he had the know how to make the business successful. He had eternal patience and he had passion and commitment to the brand. We know that it was not an easy task for him, having to put up with the competition and bureaucracy but his eternal patience paid off and he is reaping the fruits of success.
