CREATE YOUR PERSONALISED PERFUME AT REID'S PALACE IN MADEIRA, SPAIN

KEE@FSWMAG.COM

I HAVE ALWAYS TOYED WITH THE IDEA OF CREATING MY OWN PERFUME UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF A PERFUMER OF COURSE.

ALAS, SUCH BESPOKE SCENTS COST AN ARM AND LEG AND IN THE CASE OF THE PERFUME MASTERCLASS AT REID'S PALACE HOTEL IN MADEIRA, SPAIN, IT COSTS A SHADE ABOVE RM 1,900 BUT YOU DO END UP WITH AN UNIQUE, ONE OF A KIND PERFUME THAT YOU CREATED YOURSELF!

How's that for haute couture perfume, made to measure or distilled to the last drop with your own manicured fingers?

Now you can boast of having a perfume made for you BY you! How exclusive is that?

Still, Spain is a long flight and you have to change plane at Madrid. You must also pay RM 1,100 per night as Reid's Palace hotel insists their rooms are not inclusive of your perfume crash course.

Me, I have decided to take the easier route by spraying 2, 3 or 4 perfumes on my neck and let the different scents combine to produce a new scent all my own! Of course the results vary dramatically from day to day since I have, like most fashionistas, at least 30 bottles of perfumes, some of which have not been even opened! So my route to perfume exclusivity is strictly potluck.

But my highclass, highborn and high-society readers will doubtless insist on taking the next available flight on 18 to 20 September for the pop-up masterclasses.

This is what you get at the end of the course---your own, customised perfume created for you BY you!

Pop-Up Perfumery at Reid’s Palace
Create Your Own Scent at the Legendary Hotel

The trend for all things pop-up shows no sign of letting-up with the celebrated Reid’s Palace in Madeira leading the way. From the 18th – 20th September the hotel will be home to its own Pop-Up Perfumery inviting guests to discover the mysteries of the exclusive world of fragrance and the art of creating a signature scent.

Set in subtropical gardens overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, on an island that is renowned for its exotic flowers and spring like weather, Reid’s Palace is the ideal location to learn the secrets of creating a perfume.

Expert MaĆ®tre Parfumeur, Nicolas de Barry, will guide guests on a series of masterclasses, steering them through a history of perfume, the raw materials that make-up a scent, how to combine ingredients and ultimately how to create their own fragrance and massage oil. Guests could have no better teacher than Nicolas, who from his own workshop at his chateau near Blois in France creates fragrances for the stars and has published a number of books on the intricate art of perfumery.

Available for a limited time only, guests can choose between three aromatic masterclasses enabling them to become experts in the skill of mixing aromas.

Perfume Masterclass One – The first masterclass starts with a visit to the 10 acres of lush gardens that surround Reid’s Palace where many exotic flowers are grown including geraniums, hibiscus and salvias and to the beautiful local gardens at Quintinha das Ervas. During the masterclass guests will have the opportunity to see and learn about aromatic herbs and the raw materials that are basic to all scents.

Perfume Masterclass Two – During the second masterclass, the soon to be “Perfumiers” explore the world of essentials oils, their influence on perfumes and on the body. They will learn how to create bath salt, and perfume paper. The day will be completed with the creation of a massage oil.

Perfume Masterclass Three – The perfect way for participants to complete their experience within the world of perfumes, guests will discover the difference between “Eau de Cologne” and “Eau de Parfum”, before creating their own exclusive perfume with the help of Maitre Nicolas de Barry

The Pop-Up Perfumery will be held in the William Reid Room at Reid’s Palace, with masterclasses from 2.30pm to 5.30pm each day. The Pop-Up Perfumery will cost from 480 Euros (approx £377) per person for all three masterclasses. Private lessons for individual guests or small organised groups can be arranged throughout the year.

Prices at Reid’s Palace start from 275 Euros (approx £216) per night in September, based on two sharing a Charming Room with breakfast. For further information or to make a booking please call the Orient-Express reservations team on 0845 077 2222 or visit www.reidspalace.com
